Why is AMT important?

AMT is rapidly changing the nature of manufacturing. To remain competitive, Canadian firms must adopt these technologies, and Canadian must continue to be an innovative, creating new processes and technologies. Firms in the AMT sector are important to the economy. There are over 500 AMT producers in Canada, exporting about 60% of their output; domestic sales total $4 billion; and approximately 19,000 Canadians are employed in the sector.

What is the purpose of this website?

The site is meant to be a knowledge and educational tool to inform and educate potential buyers about a broad spectrum of advanced manufacturing technologies serving many industries. It aims to ensure that potential buyers actually learn of the existence of the products, technologies and human resource training available from Canadian firms and institutions, to improve the productivity and profitability of their operations. The site acts as a clearinghouse of information on advanced manufacturing technologies, turning the web into a quick, easy and useful resource for business.

Why is Industry Canada involved in this project?

Our Minister has stated that there is "a new and important role for government in stimulating the growth of technology-intensive industries" if Canada is to remain prosperous. Industry Canada is taking a lead role in diffusing technology throughout the economy, in order to create jobs and opportunities for business. The Manufacturing Industries Branch of Industry Canada has sponsored this site, and believes in its importance.
