Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
,

  1. How can we (i.e., the company) get a grant from NSERC?

NSERC funds are awarded to Canadian universities and colleges. Companies are welcome to collaborate with and support applications from these institutions for grant funds.

  2. What is the difference between cash and in-kind contributions?

A cash contribution is a purely financial contribution, while an in-kind contribution is a non-monetary contribution, such as equipment, supplies, technical services, or staff time. The required level of cash and in-kind contributions varies among NSERC's funding programs.

  3. What is a peer-review process?

NSERC uses a peer-review process, which means funding applications are assigned to experts (in academia, government and industry) for review. Based in large part on their recommendations, NSERC will make a decision on the grant request.

  4. Do all applications go through the peer-review process?

All project, chair, or network applications are peer-reviewed. Some scholarship applications are reviewed by the host universities and NSERC.

  5. What is the turnaround for a decision on a grant application?

This depends on the program. It ranges from two to five months, but can be delayed if information is missing from the proposal, or aspects of the proposal are unsatisfactory.
