Crosstown » A Band Apart

Barbara Peacock, the host of Crosstown and Phil Roberts, the nature columnist were at Holiday Beach Migration Observatory.

It's one of the busiest spots in North America during the fall migration as hundreds of thousands of birds fly through there, looking for the shortest distance possible over open water.

There are huge numbers of blue jays, hawks, and dozens of other birds including hummingbirds. Volunteer bird banders head there at this time of year to catch birds, band them for scientific research, and release them to continue on their migration.

Phil Roberts is the Chief Bander at the HBMO and two of the very specialized banders were there too: Rachel who does monarch butterflies, and Carl who bands hummingbirds.
