Canadian Organizations

The phrase “social fabric” is often used to describe the workings of society and the relationships among people and institutions. Quality of life is closely linked to the institutions that provide social services, establish law, regulate commerce, and foster the development of arts, research and education.

Canada has a long history of providing for its people through public institutions that distribute wealth with fairness and equity. All levels of government – federal, provincial and municipal – are accountable to the people who elect representatives to manage their affairs. Canada has a social safety net that assists people in need, a public system that makes health, education and social services accessible, and a legal system that provides everyone with the same rights.

Non-government organizations and associations are involved in all facets of Canadian life including culture, social advocacy, environment, spirituality, sport, and business. Those organizations complement the services provided by governments. They rely on donations and contributions and many receive public financial assistance to support programmes that enhance the quality of life of Canadians.

A large number of private organizations such as business and industry associations are in place in Canada to advance the objectives of particular groups. Many are involved in the promotion of education, the arts and general well being.

In many ways, Canada is defined by the stability of its organizations resulting in a social structure that engenders trust, fairness and commitment.
