Can the arts define Canada? They can – and increasingly, they do.

 

Creators from all artistic disciplines express who we are as a people as they present their music, their movies, their art, their design, their stories and their performances to Canadians and to the world.

 

Over the past few decades, Canadian artists from architects to writers, and Canadian arts, have gained centre stage in the hearts and minds of Canadians, and have become key figures on the international arts scene.

 

We are also witnessing an era where technology and the arts are converging – where music, hip hop, literature, dance, visual arts and design are now found online, in blogs, podcasts and other mobile media – and sometimes they are found exclusively in these new spheres. Canada is at the forefront of this digital culture movement and Canadian artists are world leaders in the creation and the production of new media.

 

Canada is a young and diverse nation and artists from all backgrounds bring new perspectives and avant-garde ideas to everything that is Canada. Through the disciplines they represent, artists in Canada reinvent our history, our land, our people, and most of all our spirit.
