Awards that Recognize Contributions to Canadian Society

Why does Canada have such an enviable quality of life? Some of the answers are obvious – bountiful resources, an educated population, social programmes that provide for the well being of people, opportunity and freedom.

Quality of life is also defined by the implication and actions of people and groups who have a vocation to make life better for others. Those are people who provide voluntary social and health services, people who design cities and buildings with attention to human activity, people who work for the environment, people involved in education and culture, and people who advance knowledge and the application of knowledge.

Many of those people who strive for the improvement of our society are recognized through a number of awards and honours. Those range from the recognition of courage in extraordinary circumstances, donations to noble causes, involvement with the less fortunate, scientific and technical accomplishments and achievements, and many other categories. Recognitions are made by all levels of government as well as by private organizations.
