Canadian Fisheries Industry
Federal Government Links
Responsibility for this industry in Canada is shared by several federal departments:
- Fisheries and Oceans Canada - Develops and implements policies and programs in support of Canada's economic, ecological and scientific interests in oceans and inland waters. As well, it is responsible for the
conservation and sustainable use of Canada's fisheries resources. There are also specific sections of Fisheries and Oceans dealing with particular issues:
- Freshwater Fish Marketing Corporation - Objectives: to market fish in an orderly manner, to increase returns to fishermen and to promote markets and export trade in fish.
- The Fish and Seafood Online Web site (part of Agriculture and Agri-food Canada) has atlases to show where fish and seafood is produced, fact sheets, a directory of suppliers, industry overviews and an events calendar.
- The Institute for Marine Biosciences carries out biotechnologicial research on fish, seafood and aquaculture and helps maintain Canada's international reputation for safe, high-quality seafood products.
