Media Update - Status of investigation into the shooting death of RCMP Cst Douglas Scott

Iqaluit, NU — November 9, 2007 —The first phase of the investigation into the death of Cst Doug Scott is wrapping up today, with the departure of the forensic and investigative teams from Kimmirut.

The next phase involves analysis of the forensic evidence from the various crime scenes, and analysis of the statements of witnesses and community members.

Until this very detailed work has been completed, one simply cannot know precisely what happened on the night of November 5.

The investigative team from Human Resources and Social Development Canada (HRSDC) is arriving today to begin their information gathering as they analyze the events with respect to work safety concerns.

The accused, Ping Kolola, made his first appearance in court in Iqaluit today. The next court appearance will be on December 4, 2007.

RCMP Commissioner William Elliott arrives in Iqaluit today. He will travel to Kimmirut to meet privately with the community and RCMP members there. He will also be meeting with RCMP personnel and their families in Iqaluit.
