Pennsylvanians and Canadians share our nation’s most treasured values and beliefs— representative democracy, religious freedom, rule of law, free enterprise, and cultural diversity. Together we have welcomed to our shores millions of immigrants seeking refuge from oppression and offered them a wealth of opportunity to seek prosperity and enjoy the fruits of liberty. Our forefathers worked hand-in-hand to bring slaves to freedom through the Underground Railroad that wound its way through Pennsylvania to its terminus in Canada. Our sons and daughters have laboured together to defend freedom and to aid societies subjugated by dictatorship or ravaged by natural disasters and poverty. Buttressing these common values are the many close ties between family and friends that stretch across our common border.
