Small businesses are the backbone of the Canadian economy. They account for 99 percent of all businesses in the country; they lead in job creation (over two million jobs created between 1993 and 2003 — of which one million came from start-up companies) and are responsible for over 20 percent of the country's gross domestic product (Industry Canada, Key Small Business Statistics, July 2007).
