NAC distributes Teacher Resource Kits to all elementary schools in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Atlantic Canada

December 14, 2006 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre’s teacher resource kit, Vivaldi and the Four Seasons, is this week arriving in school boards for distribution to every elementary school in Ontario, Quebec, Manitoba and Atlantic Canada for a total distribution of 8,650. The 32-page kit is designed to be used by generalist classroom teachers to teach music to school children, and also contains cross-curricular links to other content-related topics such as Climate Change. Every kit includes a complimentary copy of the CBC Records Vivaldi: Four Seasons CD featuring Pinchas Zukerman and the NAC Orchestra. The Vivaldi and the Four Seasons kit has received the Curriculum Services Canada Seal of Quality.

Vivaldi and the Four Seasons, which has been produced in separate English and French versions, includes ready-to-use lesson plans and student activity sheets on Vivaldi’s life, times and music designed to be used by classroom teachers of Grades 4 to 6. Itincludes a Four Seasons listening guide, a musician’s corner, music to be sung or played on recorder, and an original children’s story written especially for the NAC by C.J. Taylor, an author of Mohawk origin. The kit was illustrated by George Littlechild of the Cree Nation.

The kit was used as the curriculum unit to help teachers prepare students for the Mashteuiatsh Recorder Project (Vivaldi and the Fifth Season) during the NAC Orchestra’s recent Quebec Tour.

This completes the NAC’s free distribution of the Vivaldi and the Four Seasons kit to all elementary schools across the country. The National Arts Centre has distributed teacher resource kits in connection with all its national and international tours since 1999. Teachers looking for their school’s copy should contact their school board. The kit can also be downloaded for free from the NAC’s performing arts education website www.ArtsAlive.ca in the section titled Resources for Teachers.
