The von Trapp Children, direct descendants of the family made famous through The Sound of Music, perform with Jack Everly and the NAC Orchestra in CTV Pops concerts, February 22-24

February 09, 2007 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The von Trapp Children, descendants of the famous singing family whose story captivated the world in The Sound of Music are coming to perform with the National Arts Centre Orchestra from Thursday, February 22 to Saturday, February 24 at 20:00 in Southam Hall. As the great-grandchildren of Captain von Trapp, they have inherited the family’s unique musical gift. Principal Pops Conductor Jack Everly is on the podium for the occasion, and will open the concert with a selection of music composed around the time the Family fled Nazi-occupied Austria in 1938.

The Sound of Music captured the hearts of millions when the film debuted in 1965. Now, forty years later, the von Trapp’s family legacy is born anew. Meet the von Trapp Children: Sofia (18), Melanie (16), Amanda (15), and Justin (12). The children, whose effervescent voices mesh the way only a family’s can, have continued the tradition of the family’s exceptional musical gift and love of singing, sharing songs and heart-warming family stories of life before and after coming to America. They perform a variety of folk and classical songs from various European and American traditions, as well as timeless pieces from The Sound of Music.

Selections from the famous musical will include “Do-Re-Mi”, “The Lonely Goatherd”, “My Favourite Things”, “Edelweiss”, “Climb Every Mountain” and “So Long, Farewell”.

Jack Everly’s selection of pre-war hits will include Snow White Fantasy, “September Song”, the overture from The Boys from Syracuse, “My Funny Valentine”, “The West, A Nest and You, Dear” and The Song of India.

The von Trapp children have performed with such major orchestras as Boston Pops, Atlanta, Baltimore, Indianapolis, Detroit, Phoenix, Milwaukee Symphonies and the Minnesota Orchestra, as well as a world tour that took them to Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Japan and Korea. They have recorded three albums, and an a cappella album and an album of all-new Christmas music are currently in production. Filmed footage of the children’s 2005 performance at the Hollywood Bowl has been included in 20th Century Fox’s 40th anniversary DVD release of the movie as well. The children were also named outstanding singing group at the 2006 Young Artist Awards.
