NAC-CBC Debut Series features pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre in recital on June 19

June 10, 2002 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The final concert of the Debut Series, co-presented by the National Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two, will feature award-winning pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre, in recital. The hour-long concert will take place on Wednesday, June 19 in the NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. This annual recital series gives young Canadian musicians the opportunity to perform at the National Arts Centre and to have their recitals recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Radio Two. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly appreciated.

Sylvestre's solo piano recital consists of Piano Soleil by Canadian composer Denis Gougeon, six selections from Janacek's On An Over-grown Path, Ravel's "Alborado del Gracioso" from Miroirs and two Ballades and a Nocturne by Chopin.

Jean-Philippe Sylvestre won the National Arts Centre People's Choice Award at the 2001 CBC Radio Competition for Young Performers as well as taking second prize overall. At the same Competition he also won the special prize for best interpretation of the imposed work by Denis Gougeon that he will be performing in this recital, and finally a scholarship to attend the Holland Music Sessions this coming summer. A graduate of the École de musique Vincent-d'Indy, he is currently enrolled at the Faculté de musique de l'Université de Montréal.

He was also the first prize-winner of the Canadian Music Competition in 1995, the 1996 competition of the Orchestre symphonique de Trois-Rivières, the 2000 competition of the Orchestre symphonique de la Montérégie, and the 2000 competition of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 1998 Sylvestre performed a series of concerts in Prague and Bohemia after becoming a prize-winner of the Concertino Praga Competition in 1997, and in 1999 was invited to perform as soloist and accompanist during the Czech and Slovakian Musical Encounters.

Please note that this concert was postponed from its original date of January 15.
