NAC-CBC Debut Series features pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre in recital on June 19

Ottawa, Canada -- The final concert of the Debut Series,
co-presented by the National Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two, will
feature award-winning pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre, in recital.
The hour-long concert will take place on Wednesday, June 19 in the
NAC Studio at 12:00 noon. This annual recital series gives young
Canadian musicians the opportunity to perform at the National Arts
Centre and to have their recitals recorded and broadcast nationally
on CBC Radio Two. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the
NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund
are greatly appreciated.
Sylvestre's solo piano recital consists of Piano
Soleil by Canadian composer Denis Gougeon, six selections from
Janacek's On An Over-grown Path, Ravel's "Alborado
del Gracioso" from Miroirs and two Ballades and a Nocturne by
Chopin.
Jean-Philippe Sylvestre won the National Arts Centre People's
Choice Award at the 2001 CBC Radio Competition for Young Performers
as well as taking second prize overall. At the same Competition he
also won the special prize for best interpretation of the imposed
work by Denis Gougeon that he will be performing in this recital, and
finally a scholarship to attend the Holland Music Sessions this
coming summer. A graduate of the École de musique
Vincent-d'Indy, he is currently enrolled at the Faculté
de musique de l'Université de Montréal.
He was also the first prize-winner of the Canadian Music
Competition in 1995, the 1996 competition of the Orchestre
symphonique de Trois-Rivières, the 2000 competition of the
Orchestre symphonique de la Montérégie, and the 2000
competition of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra. In 1998 Sylvestre
performed a series of concerts in Prague and Bohemia after becoming a
prize-winner of the Concertino Praga Competition in 1997, and in 1999
was invited to perform as soloist and accompanist during the Czech
and Slovakian Musical Encounters.
