National Arts Centre Orchestra's Atlantic Tour: November 12 to November 20, 2002
October 01, 2002 -
The National Arts Centre Orchestra with Music Director Pinchas
Zukerman as conductor and violin soloist will embark on an Atlantic
Tour from November 12 to November 20, 2002. After preview
performances in Ottawa on November 5 and 7, the National Arts Centre
Orchestra will head to five cities in the Atlantic Provinces:
St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador; Halifax, Nova Scotia;
Moncton and Saint John, New Brunswick; and Charlottetown, PEI. The
Tour concludes with a concert at Roy Thomson Hall in Toronto.
Pinchas Zukerman is well-known around the world for his dedication
to teaching and to the musical development of young artists. The
National Arts Centre, which plays a leading national role in
education and community outreach, and in the use of new technology to
reach Canadians from coast to coast, has planned 50 different
education activities over the course of the Tour. Some of these will
be accessible across the country through the Internet.
"I know I speak for all the musicians when I say how much we are
looking forward to performing in Atlantic Canada, and sharing music
with the talented young people of these communities in their
classrooms and universities," said Pinchas Zukerman. "We're
reaching out across the country, helping develop the next generation
of musicians."
On the National Arts Centre Orchestra's Atlantic Tour,
Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D major, a monumental
tour-de-force for which the world-renowned violinist Pinchas Zukerman
is especially celebrated, will be featured on most programmes with
Zukerman leading the Orchestra from the violin. Another programme
highlight is Schubert's Symphony No. 3, which can also be
heard on a CBC Records/Les disques SRC CD released across the country
this week. An alternate programme features NAC Orchestra principal
oboe Charles Hamann performing Bach's Concerto for Violin and
Oboe with Pinchas Zukerman. Zukerman will also perform
Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 3 and conduct Mozart's
Symphony No. 38.
All concert programmes feature Syllables of Unknown Meaning
by Canadian composer Gary Kulesha, one of the three composers who
were recently named recipients of the National Arts Centre's
Composers Awards of $75,000 as part of the National Arts Centre New
Music Programme. Kulesha will tour with the Orchestra and will lead
composition workshops with students in several universities. Members
of the National Arts Centre's New Music Ensemble will provide
demonstrations. These composition activities are made possible
through the generous support of Canadian composer Ann Southam, the
Centre's New Music Outreach Partner.
Other outreach activities on the Tour include master classes for
advanced students with Pinchas Zukerman and principal musicians of
the National Arts Centre Orchestra; sectional rehearsals with
instrumental groups from youth ensembles; question-and-answer
sessions in schools with Pinchas Zukerman and members of the National
Arts Centre Orchestra; National Arts Centre Orchestra String Quintet
performance-demonstrations for school-children; and pre-concert Youth
Choir Performances in the lobbies of every venue where the National
Arts Centre Orchestra appears.
Schubert's Party, a Student Resource Kit produced by
the National Arts Centre on the life and times of Schubert, will be
distributed to every elementary school in Atlantic Canada. Each kit
will include a complimentary CD of the National Arts Centre
Orchestra's most recent recording with CBC Records/Les Disques
SRC: Schubert Symphonies Nos. 2 and 3 and the Rondo for Violin and
Strings. The kit can also be downloaded from the National Arts Centre
website: www.nac-cna.ca.
National Arts Centre Orchestra Apprentice Conductor Jean-Philippe
Tremblay will lead the full Orchestra and young local musicians in a
student matinee featuring the music of Schubert in St. John's,
Newfoundland and Labrador. Tremblay will also be involved in other
school visits on tour.
New Media activities will make the National Arts Centre
Orchestra's Atlantic Tour accessible to all Canadians through the
NAC's education outreach website, "ArtsAlive.ca". Content will
include a video Web journal of interviews with musicians, staff and
students. The site will also feature original content such as the
NACO Schubert study guide, online activities, games and e-cards. The
tour will also feature two broadband video conferences available to
audiences on Canada's CA*net4 network.New Media Activities will make
the National Arts Centre's Atlantic Tour available to all
Canadians through the Centre's website at www.nac-cna.ca. These
activities include a web journal of video interviews with musicians,
staff and students; two live interactive broadband events;
activities, games and E-cards; and the "Orchestral Compass", a
networking resource guide for music educators and performing arts
organizations.
