NAC Orchestra's CJOH Pops Series begins with "Bugs Bunny on Broadway", October 10-12

October 01, 2002 -

Ottawa, Canada -- The National Arts Centre Orchestra kicks off its 2002-2003 CJOH Pops Series with Bugs Bunny On Broadway, presented by Warner Bros. and starring Warner Bros.' carrot-chomping, wise-cracking "wascally wabbit", Bugs Bunny and his Looney Tunes friends, Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck, Wile E. Coyote, the Road Runner and more, in memorable cartoons projected above the musicians onto the NAC's giant silver screen in Southam Hall. The National Arts Centre Orchestra conducted by the show's creator and producer George Daugherty will provide the live musical accompaniment of classical music favourites that millions got to know and love through famous Looney Tunes cartoons. Bugs Bunny on Broadway runs from Thursday, October 10 to Saturday, October 12 at 20:00.

Almost entirely based upon the classical musical war horses, cartoons like What's Opera, Doc?, The Rabbit of Seville, Corny Concerto, Baton Bunny, Rhapsody Rabbit, High Note, and Zoom and Bored were not only exceptional examples of a unique American art form - the cartoon short - but also had incredible musical scores. With classical interpretations composed by Carl Stalling and Milt Frankly incorporating the musical themes of Rossini, Strauss, Wagner and Tchaikovsky, and animation direction by Friz Freleng, Robert Clampett, Robert McKimson and the late Chuck Jones, Bugs Bunny on Broadway has achieved overwhelming success. This show's unique combination of film and live music - the original scores are played in perfect synchronization by the orchestra - took Broadway by storm, and it became an instant hit, playing a sold-out, extended run at New York's Gershwin Theatre. It has since played repeated sold-out performances not only on Broadway, but at the Sydney Opera House, Moscow's Kremlin Palace, London's Royal Festival Hall with The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, and six semi-annual sold out performances at the 18,000 seat Hollywood Bowl with The Los Angeles Philharmonic.

George Daugherty's career includes conducting, film and television directing, producing and writing for both live stage productions and interactiv CD-ROMs. As a conductor he has appeared frequently with the Los Angeles Philharmonic and San Francisco Symphony as well as other major American and international symphony orchestras. His successful career as a director and producer earned him an Emmy Award for his 1996 production of Peter and the Wolf, an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Music Direction, and a 1997 Writers Guild of American Award.

The National Arts Centre Orchestra will perform Bugs Bunny on Broadway from October 10 to 12.
