National Arts Centre Orchestra led by Pinchas Zukerman performs at the State University of New York (SUNY) on September 20. Zukerman and musicians will give ten master classes at SUNY

September 11, 2003 -

Ottawa, Canada -- Music Director Pinchas Zukerman will lead the National Arts Centre Orchestra in a special concert at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Potsdam on Saturday, September 20 at 19:30 in Helen Hosmer Hall. While they are at SUNY, Maestro Zukerman and principal musicians of the Orchestra will give a number of master classes to music students at the Crane School of Music, in keeping with the Orchestra's commitment to education while on tour.

Pinchas Zukerman will lead a violin and viola master class on Saturday, September 20 from 15:00 to 16:30, including questions from the audience of up to 600 music students. NAC Orchestra musicians, including principal flute Joanna G'froerer, principal trumpet Karen Donnelly, principal horn Lawrence Vine, cellist Margaret Munro Tobolowska, principal timpanist Ian Bernard, and principal trombone Donald Renshaw, will lead master classes from 13:00 to 14:45. In addition the NAC is arranging for renowned choral director Duain Wolfe, Director of the Chicago Symphony Chorus (who will be in Ottawa preparing the choirs for the NAC Orchestra's season-opening Brahms concerts) to lead a choral workshop with Crane students on Friday, September 19 from 14:00-16:00.

The concert programme in Helen Hosmer Hall opens with Pinchas Zukerman leading the Orchestra from the violin in Mozart's Violin Concerto No. 5, "Turkish" which is part of a soon-to-be-released CBC Records CD of Mozart music. Zukerman will then lead the NAC Orchestra in Brahms's Symphony No. 1, which Ottawa audiences will have heard in Southam Hall the previous two evenings.

The education partnership between the National Arts Centre at SUNY began with SUNY's support of the NAC's Youth and Education Trust through the 2002 NAC Fall Gala, and subsequent sponsorship of an open rehearsal. Students have since traveled to Ottawa to participate in master classes at the National Arts Centre. SUNY's Crane School of Music has fully embraced the NAC's commitment to education and is making the maximum out of the upcoming visit.

There will be a Pre-Concert Lecture by Dr. Chris Lanz at 18:30 in the Wakefield Recital Hall.
