On February 10, NAC/CBC 2004 Debut Series features baritone Peter Barrett, winner of the Galaxie Rising Star prize at the 2003 CBC Radio Competition for Young Performers

Ottawa, Canada -- The young baritone Peter Barrett, winner of the Galaxie Rising Star prize at the 2003 CBC Radio Competition for Young Performers, is the next performer on the National Arts Centre and CBC Radio Two Debut Series on Tuesday, February 10 at 12:00 noon in the NAC Studio. Barrett will sing songs by Schubert, Mahler, Vaughan Williams, Mercure and Gounod, accompanied by pianist Peter Tiefenbach.
These hour-long recitals, co-presented by the NAC and CBC Radio Two, give young Canadian musicians the opportunity to perform at the National Arts Centre and to have their recitals recorded and broadcast nationally on CBC Radio Two. Admission is $2.00 with all proceeds going to the NAC Orchestra Bursary Trust Fund. Additional donations to the Fund are greatly appreciated.
Peter Barrett and Peter Tiefenbach will perform Schubert’s Songs from “Die schöne Müllerin”, Mahler’s Ruckert Lieder, Vaughan Williams’ Songs of Travel, Canadian composer Pierre Mercure’s Songs of Dissidence, and Gounod’s “Avant de quitter ces lieux…” from Faust.
Peter Barrett is a native of Cornerbrook, Newfoundland. A member of the Canadian Opera Company Ensemble Studio, he made his debut with the COC at the 2003 Altamira Summer Opera Concerts and recently sang the roles of Aeneas and Schlendrian in the Ensemble Studio double-bill presentation of Dido and Aeneas and The Coffee Cantata. He will sing the role of Marullo in Rigoletto later this season with the COC. He has studied at Hartwick College and at Tanglewood in the U.S., and recently graduated from the Glenn Gould Professional School of the Royal Conservatory of Music, where he performed the roles of Guglielmo in Così fan tutte, Aeneas in Dido and Aeneas and Papageno in Die Zauberflöte.
Peter Tiefenbach is a native of Regina, Saskatchewan and studied music in Canada, the United States and England. He now enjoys a lively and varied career as a pianist, conductor, composer/arranger, vocal coach, writer, and broadcaster. He is a member of the faculty of the Glenn Gould Professional School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto. Tiefenbach returns to the NAC soon to play “Gerhard Krachmann” in Simpl, a co-production by the NAC and Toronto's Tarragon Theatre.
