Middle Europe -- Folk Song to Symphony: TD Bank Financial Group Young People’s Concerts on March 26 led by Boris Brott with Pinchas Zukerman as guest violinist

March 16, 2005 -

Ottawa (Canada) -- “Middle Europe – Folk Song to Symphony” is the title of the next TD Bank Financial Group Young People’s Concerts on Saturday, March 26 at 13:30 and 15:30 with the National Arts Centre Orchestra led by Boris Brott, Principal Youth and Family Conductor. The Orchestra’s own resident violin superstar Pinchas Zukerman will appear as guest star along with Les Sortilèges, a young SuzukiMusic string ensemble, the Middle european folk music band MoucheTaBouche, and Ottawa-based Alpenhorn player James Ogilvy. “Folk Song to Symphony”, a bilingual concert for children aged 7 and up and their grown-up friends, continues this season’s theme of exploring the rhythms, melodies, harmonies and syncopation that make up our multicultural world.

The concert ticket includes Pre-Concert Activities in the NAC Foyer organized by the NAC Orchestra Association 45 minutes prior to each concert, beginning at 12:45 for the first concert and 14:45 for the second concert. Community partners for “Folk Song to Symphony” include SuzukiMusic, the Ottawa Public Library, Music for Young Children, and luthier Peter Mach and the Ottawa Guild of Lacemakers.

“Middle Europe – Folk Song to Symphony” explores the stories, poems and ethnic melodies that inspired many composers of Europe in the 19th century. Colourful selections range from polkas and furiants to a variety of folk dances. Musical excerpts include Smetana’s The Bartered Bride, J. Strauss’s Tritsch,Tratsch Polka and Bartók’s Romanian Folk Dances, all featuring the dancers of Les Sortilèges; Dvorák’s Slavonic Dance with Pinchas Zukerman and SuzukiMusic students; the Finale of Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, Bartók’s Mikrokosmos Suite: From the diary of a fly and the Largo from Dvorák’s New World Symphony. The grand finale is a performance by Pinchas Zukerman of “Fiddler Fantasy”, an arrangement of music from Jerry Bock’s landmark musical Fiddler on the Roof, arranged for violin and orchestra by Ottawa’s own Eddie Karam.

At this season’s concerts, YPC subscribers have had the opportunity to purchase their own recorders in the NAC Foyer for the low cost of $5 thanks to St. John’s Music, and to register for family recorder clinics at $2 per person presented in partnership with St. John’s Music and Yamaha Canada. Participants can bring their recorders and perform together with the NAC Orchestra in the excerpt from Dvorák’s New World Symphony. Recorders will continue to be sold in the Foyer, and there will be participatory music at each concert.

All TD Bank Financial Group Young People’s Concerts feature NACOtron presented in collaboration with Rogers Television. Five television cameras positioned on stage and in the hall capture live video images of the musicians while they are performing, and these images are projected onto a giant screen above the stage allowing the audience to watch the action in close-up.

The Ottawa Citizen is the media partner of the TD Bank Financial Group Young People’s Concerts.
