IDRC’s President, Maureen O’Neil, appeared before the Canadian House of Commons Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development on 2 October 2006 as part of its study on democratic development. O’Neil spoke of IDRC’s mandate, its diverse areas of work, and how research in developing countries can foster democratic development. “Research expands the range of practical solutions to enduring problems. Research broadens the range of practical solutions available to citizens, organizations, and policymakers,” said O’Neil. “Research highlights trade-offs, maps the complexities of problems, and gives voice to different perspectives. Research inspires debate and helps citizens think through difficult questions. Research feeds innovation.” The Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Development studies and reports on Canadian foreign and development policy, including Canada’s relations with other countries; international affairs and international security; and international organizations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and the International Monetary Fund.
