February 22, 2005, Ottawa — On January 2, 2005, the Royal
Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) established a Missing Persons Task Force
at the request of Foreign Affairs Canada (FAC). The mandate of the task
force is to assist in identifying Canadians reported missing as a result
of the South Asian Tsunami disaster.
All phone calls and e-mails received by the RCMP
Missing Persons Task Force have now been acted on by the RCMP or FAC.
The Task Force is in ongoing contact with the families of those believed
to be missing as a result of the tsunami disaster. However, we will
be discontinuing the Tip Line because we have not received any calls
to it for some time now.
If
anyone has not yet reported a missing loved one, they are asked to
contact FAC as soon as possible by phoning 1-800-387-3124 (in Ottawa,
call 996-8885) or by sending an e-mail to sos@international.gc.ca.
