On May 17, CBC Radio announced the redevelopment of the weekend programming on Radio 2. This development activity is designed to broaden the network to better reflect the musical diversity of Canada while maintaining a commitment to its current mandate of classical music. This work is crucial to Radio 2's role as a public broadcaster and to the long-term viability of the Radio 2 service.
The headline from the May 17th announcement is the “renewal” of classical programming on weekends. Afternoons on the weekend on Radio 2 will be classical. A new flagship classical performance show will be created to air on Sundays between 1 p.m and 5 p.m. This show promises to present the best classical music of all genres including orchestral, recitalists and soloists.
Saturday Afternoon at the Opera will continue, building on its strength with the audience.
Weekends will also be the place where discovery meets context. Music and ideas programs will look into music - the people, the trends, and the music itself - in series and specials.
