Spontaneous Variations On A Theme

Studio Sparks are (correction: IS!) very excited (I believe "thrilled" was the exact word) to present this live broadcast, in front of their Studio 40-on-the-Sparks-Street-Mall audience, by Venezuelan pianist Gabriela Montero.

She's a classical pianist who also likes to improvise, harkening back to practices largely discarded now by classical players (it's true, the jazzers didn't get there first). Apparently her latest recording, Baroque, includes some of that improvisatory spirit, with interpretations of music including Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus. (Hey, I once sung in a choir that felt like it was improvising every time we sang the Messiah, but that's another story, and not worthy of radio broadcast, as is the work of Ms. Montero.)

Should read "Studio Sparks IS very excited..."

SS IS the name of A show -- completely singular.

You are so right, Jack. Blog in haste, repent at leisure! I admit I was thinking of the team of people who put Sparks together. Sometimes when you have worked behind the scenes in radio you think of a show, and you see the host, the producers, the person at the soundboard...still, a grammatical goof up without question.

I am a big fan of Gabriela Montero's work but unfortunately will not be near a radio this afternoon. Will this performance be archived for later listening on-line?

UPDATE! It will be posted, I was totally wrong earlier. So you have two options: listen live at a later time zone on the R2 site, or wait a few days; they will post the session, but it won't be right away. And in fact, many of the Studio Sparks sessions are up on their Features page

Thanks for the info. Also thanks to your website for making me aware that Ms. Montero is in Canada. I now have my ticket to see her tomorrow night in Toronto.

You're very welcome -- and I'm happy to report that Ms. Montero's performance on Studio Sparks is now available on the Studio Sparks webpage -- under Features.
