One of
the few surviving buildings of the Great Fire of 1877, the Loyalist House
serves as a proud reminder of Saint John's British Loyalist heritage. Built in
1817, the Georgian features of this National Historic Site has remained
structurally unaltered.
Originally known
as the 'house on the hill', it was constructed of pine with cyprus shingles on
the south and west walls. The front entrance still holds its original fanlight
and brass knocker.
The house was originally owned by the Merritt family. Their biographies are available here, from the Dictionary of Canadian Biography http://www.biographi.ca.
Acquired by the New Brunswick Historical Society in 1959, the Loyalist House is a breath-taking beauty perserving the excellence of the early craftsmen of Saint John.
Come and visit
downtown Saint John to take in the full features offered.

The interior of the house is beautifully maintained and quite elegant. It has been said by many American visitors that the entrance hall is quite similar to that of George Washington's home on the Potomac.
