CCB 2006 Constitution
In January 2007, the federal government approved the new CCB Constitutional bylaw which was passed at the National Convention in October of 2006. Membership is now automatic for every person in Canada who is legally blind or vision impaired.

The CCB truly is the VOICE OF THE BLIND® and effectively represents over 600,000 blind and visually impaired persons across the country.

The new Constitution allows all blind and visually impaired persons to take advantage of all CCB programs, and for those who desire a more active role for voting, a nominal annual membership fee is paid to the national office.

A tremendous amount of credit must go to Geraldine Braak and her committee as well as to past president John Rempel who guided the passage of the Constitution at the convention.

Since the convention, the government has approved the CCB bylaw. This is big news for the CCB on many levels, including making the CCB the largest organization of the blind and visually impaired in Canada.

Congratulations to all Delegates at the CCB National Biennial Convention, who reviewed, discussed and approved the document. Thanks to Geraldine Braak, John Rempel and the By-Law committee for the many hours of dedicated work making this document a reality.

Canadian Council of the Blind 2006 National Convention

The 2006 CCB National Convention was a great success. Through hard work and perseverance, much was accomplished and CCB is now stronger than ever as an organization. CCB would like to give special thanks and recognition to Geraldine Braak and her support crew for the hosting of the convention. They did an excellent job and worked tirelessly around the clock to ensure events ran smoothly. Geraldine is very lucky to have such strong support from the friendly community of Powell River.

Convention Highlights:
Passing of New CCB Constitution with new By-laws: A new National Constitution with new by-laws was passed at this convention, thus ensuring a stronger and more secure CCB.

Terry Kelly concert winners: Having had the largest percentage of increased membership, the Alberta, PEI, and Ontario Divisions have all won free concerts by Terry Kelly, to be performed at a venue of their choice.

CCB Business: The Convention hosted informative and interesting workshops on the CCB/CNIB Collaboration project, the Summer Student Program, and Building Capacity. The core CCB programs were defined as: Community Peer Mentoring & Networking, Social Programs, Recreational Programs, Advocacy, Public awareness and Membership Governance.

Other Events: Although CCB business kept everyone very busy, convention participants found time to meet new friends and have a little fun during the sightseeing tour and Canada Trivia night.

The official closing banquet featured guest speakers Jim Sanders, CEO of CNIB, Chris Gray, President of the American Council of the Blind, as well as the Mayor of Powell River.

Message from the President

Harold Schnellert, National President
Harold Schnellert, National President

I would like to welcome you to the web site of the Canadian Council of the Blind (CCB).

The CCB celebrated its 60th anniversary in June 2004 in Winnipeg, and we held our successful 2006 Biennial Convention in Powell River, B.C. For the new millennium, the CCB has embarked on an ambitious task to improve new programs and create new ones to address the problems of the blind and visually impaired. Please take a moment to look at our diverse program base and other information.

The CCB is an organization not FOR the blind but OF the blind. A board of directors who are blind and visually impaired governs the CCB, and as a result, there is a special sensitivity to the needs of the blind community.

To our present, new and potential members, the CCB offers assistance and opportunities to ensure a better quality of life. Remember, you can always reach me at my email address:CCB President for any comments and suggestions.

To our donors and partners and future ones as well, I would like to extend a very special thank you for participation with the CCB. We could not offer these vital and special programs without your help.

Once again, thank you for your support and faith in the CCB.

Yours truly,
Harold Schnellert
