In the 1930s, women seemed to heed the advice of fashion experts to have one pair of metallic evening shoes in their wardrobes because metallics functioned as a neutral and went with everything. Many extant evening shoes from the period are indeed gold kid and the majority show evidence of heavy use. The owner of this pair seems to have reattached the buckles, and if she had wanted to revive their gold finish, she could have purchased a Cinderella Gold Slipper shoe polish kit specifically designed to return the sparkle to golden footwear. #MuseumFromHome #BSMFromHome #SeeTorontoSoon
Some of the shoes our Creative Director & Senior Curator, Elizabeth has caught while fishing in Animal Crossing are really familiar... 😉 This particular pair was worn by the famed Hollywood actor Bela Lugosi who fit the model of a ‘player’ perfectly. Lugosi was married five times. His third marriage lasted only four months and the co-respondent named was none other than the Hollywood star Clara Bow.
Enjoy May flowers with these men's silk house slippers that were hand-embroidered with flowers, butterflies and other motifs (French, 1860s). Did you know that floral motifs were popular in Western fashion throughout the 19th century? While women's attire made of ample use of florals for all occasions, men's fashion tended to limit flowers to clothing worn at home. Interested in learning more? These shoes are featured in our book, “The World At Your Feet” available NOW! Visit our website for more 💙 #MuseumFromHome #BSMFromHome #SeeTorontoSoon
