Ottawa, June 28, 2007 —The Honourable Vic Toews, President of the Treasury Board, approved the recommendations of the Advisory Committee on Senior Level Retention and Compensation on salary increases for the senior public service, and today announced that the Government of Canada will implement these recommendations immediately.
The Committee recommended a 2.1 per cent salary increase based on compensation increases in the Canadian labour market. In addition, the Committee recommended increases to the maximum performance pay for executives, deputy ministers and eligible Governor in Council appointees.
“I would like to thank the Committee for their work and their advice,” said Vic Toews. “The Government is addressing the Committee’s recommendations in order to bring senior public service compensation more in line with the Canadian labour market. This also allows us to recognize well-performing executives.”
“Recruitment and retention of senior public service employees are important for the Public Service of Canada ,” said Vic Toews. “The Government’s ability to attract and retain qualified and experienced personnel is essential to meeting its priorities and to delivering quality service to all Canadians, especially when we are focusing the efforts of public servants on renewal of the workforce.”
The Advisory Committee on Senior Level Retention and Compensation is comprised of private and academic leaders. Its mandate is to provide independent advice and recommendations to the President of the Treasury Board about compensation and overall human resources management matters concerning executives, deputy ministers, chief executive officers of Crown corporations and other Governor in Council appointees.
