Canadian Hydraulics Centre

Welcome to the NRC Canadian Hydraulics Centre (NRC-CHC)

CHC is a self-supporting business unit within the National Research Council Canada. We specialize in solving a wide-range of water-related problems in rivers, lakes, coastal areas and oceans.

Using our state-of-the-art facilities and sophisticated numerical models, combined with the vast experience of our staff, CHC is able to provide solutions to a large variety of problems in the field of coastal, offshore and hydraulic engineering. Similarly, we use a four-pronged approach (i.e. physical and numerical modelling, field investigations and data mining) to solve a wide range of ice engineering issues. At the same time, we are also equipped to tackle the increasing need for environmental impact assessment with the objective of protecting the environment and the public welfare. These activities include mitigation and emergency evacuation measures against natural disasters such as flooding.

CHC works closely with Canadian & international firms in optimizing & validating design concepts of marine and hydraulic structures through modelling techniques. Government agencies, including federal, provincial and municipal departments, consider CHC as their resource centre for developing tools and technologies that can assist in their operational and regulatory measures that are part of their mandate.

CHC is also well-positioned to contribute to Canadian research priorities, such as climate change impacts, reduction of greenhouse gases, renewable energy, etc. For instance, we are developing tools for handling and transportation of granular material such as mine tailings, aluminum, cement and biomass products, and for optimization of their industrial processes in order to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. CHC also specializes in optimizing designs of innovative concepts for ocean energy extraction.

CHC endeavours to offer innovative and cost effective solutions to problems in the field of hydraulics through our leading-edge capabilities and vast experience. We look forward to working with you and contributing to your project needs.
