Research Projects

In December 1998, the Toxic Substance Research Initiative (TSRI) Secretariat issued its first call for proposals and received 254 proposals from candidates across the country. In 1999-2000, a total of 81 research projects were selected for funding, allocating $10.94 million toward the first phase of research projects under the TSRI Initiative. Funding for these projects was distributed amongst the five priority research areas and accounted for more than 340 researchers across Canada, with representation in each of the provinces.

In October 1999, the TSRI Secretariat issued a second call for one-year research proposals This call targeted one-year research proposals and addressed specific priority knowledge needs not addressed in the first call for proposals. Following the deadline of the second call for proposals, the TSRI Secretariat received 82 research proposals from candidates across the country.

In the 2000-2001 fiscal year, a total of 97 research projects were funded with an allocation of $13.4 million toward the second phase of research under TSRI. There were 77 multi-year projects renewed from the 1999-2000 fiscal year. These 77 projects, in addition to one project which received wrap-up funding, representing $11.6 million in funding. The remaining 19 projects were one-year projects receiving an allocation of $1.8 million. These projects were approved as a result of the second call for proposals in October 1999.

Finally, in fiscal year 2001-2002, a total of 69 research projects were funded with a total allocation of $9.9 million. During this fiscal year, there were no one-year projects. As well, of these sixty-nine multi-year projects, one project received wrap-up funding.

TSRI Research

The research projects are presented by the five priority research areas supported by TSRI:

  1. Persistent Organic Pollutants ;
  2. Metals ;
  3. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals ;
  4. Urban Air ; and
  5. Cumulative Effects .

Included on this website are the updated List of TSRI Projects, Executive Summaries of TSRI projects, and a List of Publications related to TSRI research.

List of Projects

Included in the Lists of Projects is the project number, the title of the project, the name of the Principal Investigator and if applicable, the Collaborating Partner(s) as well as a short synopsis of the project. This synopsis answered three questions: Why the Project was Undertaken; How the Project was Conducted; and What was Found and the Conclusions. Also included in this description is the length of the research project and the total funding received per fiscal year, if applicable.

Please note that the opinions expressed under the Research portion of this website are those of the Principal Investigators and Collaborating Partner(s). The TSRI Secretariat cannot offer any guarantee in regard of accuracy and consistency and is not responsible for the findings contained herein.

Executive Summaries

Please note that the Executive Summaries are based on the Final Reports which have been reviewed and approved by the Science Management Committee (SMC).

The Executive Summary was to be approximately two pages in length.

If the Executive Summary was considered too technical or otherwise unsuitable, the researcher was asked to rewrite.

The executive summary was to :

  • State the purposes of the investigation,
  • Outline the basic procedures, and
  • Identify the main findings and the target audience.

List of Publications

Following the project description, TSRI has included a list of publications based on information provided by the researchers. This list is not meant to be exhaustive but rather is provided as a resource for dissemination by the TSRI Secretariat. The following publication lists include references of articles found in scientific journals (either published, in press or submitted); technical reports and doctoral theses.

Researchers may note a change in format from their original submission, however, this was deemed necessary by the Secretariat in order to ensure consistency. Please note that abstracts, conference proceedings, poster presentations and theses in progress have not been included on the TSRI website. Finally, TSRI has attempted to verify that the publications cited on this website are available in both languages, however, there may be some instances, where a publication is available in only one of the official languages.
