Directions to the Chalk River Research Facilities

The NRC's Neutron Program for Materials Research (NPMR) is located at CHALK RIVER inside Atomic Energy of Canada's laboratory campus, about two hours west of Ottawa. A suite of five neutron spectrometers at the NRU (National Research Universal) reactor are used to explore materials of all kinds, steels, biological tissue, composites, nanoscale structures, alloys and superconductors, to support research programs in physics, chemistry, biology, materials science, earth sciences and engineering.

By Road, from OTTAWA
- Take HIGHWAY 417 WEST and drive for approximately 65km to ARNPRIOR
- Before ARNPRIOR, HIGHWAY 417 WEST becomes HIGHWAY 17 (also known as the TRANS CANADA HIGHWAY NORTHERN ROUTE)
- On HIGHWAY 17, drive 125 km NORTH
- After passing the exits for PEMBROKE and PETAWAWA, there is a single set of TRAFFIC LIGHTS on HIGHWAY 17 in the Village of CHALK RIVER
- Turn RIGHT (NORTH) off the HIGHWAY to enter CHALK RIVER Laboratories
By Road, from NORTH BAY
- From NORTH BAY take HIGHWAY 17 EAST towards OTTAWA. Drive approximately 170 km
- Turn LEFT (NORTH) off HIGHWAY 17 to enter CHALK RIVER Laboratories
By Road, from TORONTO
- From HIGHWAY 401, turn NORTH on HIGHWAY 400 to BARRIE and NORTH BAY
- After BARRIE, HIGHWAY 400 turns off toward PARRY SOUND.Take HIGHWAY 11 and drive (NORTH) to NORTH BAY
- From NORTH BAY take HIGHWAY 17 EAST towards OTTAWA
- Approximately 170 km past NORTH BAY, there is a single set of TRAFFIC LIGHTS on HIGHWAY 17 in the village of CHALK RIVER
- Turn LEFT (NORTH) off the HIGHWAY to enter CHALK RIVER Laboratories
