Q: How does the Bank of Canada handle counterfeiting?
A: The Bank of Canada has established a currency education program and bank note information line to assist Canadians in identifying genuine bank notes. The Bank monitors counterfeiting levels and collaborates closely with law enforcement agencies and financial institutions to ensure the authenticity of notes in circulation. Also, the Bank periodically changes the design and security features of bank notes.

Q: What should you do if you suspect a note is counterfeit?
A: If you have any doubt about the authenticity of a bank note, look for following security features: the colour change patch, the green dots, the sharpness of the details within the portrait, and finally the raised ink on the numerals, portrait, coat of arms, broad bands, signatures, and the vignette of the Parliament Buildings. You can also contact the Bank of Canada's Bank Note Communication and Compliance Team at 1-888-513-8212.
