| Ottawa - 4 October 2005 - The National Gallery of Canada is pleased to announce the recipients of Research Fellowship awards and TD Bank Financial Group Internships for the 2005-2006 academic year.
The National Gallery's Research Fellowship Program encourages and supports advanced research, with particular emphasis on the investigation and use of the Gallery's collections. The awards in the category of Canadian Art were increased in value with the 2005 competition. All awards -- in the categories of Canadian Art, European Art, Modern Art, Art Conservation, and the History of Photography -- will be increased to a maximum of $30,000 with the 2006-2007 competition.
The 2005-2006 competition awarded two fellowships in the field of Canadian Art. Patricia Grattan of St. John's, Nfld., will examine the relationship between the visual arts and geology, and its expression in Canadian landscape art over the past 200 years. Ms. Grattan is an independent curator and writer. She has held curatorial, arts administration and teaching positions in St. John's since 1976, and has been an active force in provincial and national arts organizations for more than three decades. From 1982 to 2003, she was Executive Director and Senior Curator of the Art Gallery of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The second Fellowship in Canadian Art was awarded to Katie Cholette of Ottawa, a doctoral candidate in Canadian Studies at Carleton University. Ms. Cholette's research will focus on the relationship between two London, Ont., artists, Greg Curnoe and Jack Chambers, as well as on the National Gallery of Canada during the 1960s and 1970s, a period of Canadian cultural nationalism and vigorous debate about the role of contemporary artists in the promotion of national cultural identity.
In 2004, the National Gallery inaugurated the TD Internships in Art Museum Education, Museum Collections Management, Art Librarianship and Library Preservation Technology. The generous sponsorship of TD Bank Financial Group allowed the Gallery to offer paid 12-week study and training opportunities and work experience to young Canadians. To mark its 150th anniversary and the Gallery's 125th anniversary, TD Bank Financial Group presented the NGC Foundation with a $125,000 donation last March to enhance the Gallery's student intern program and to acquire a new work of Inuit art. The gift will allow the Gallery to extend TD's commitment to the Internship Program until 2008.
The 2005 TD Internship in Art Education was awarded to Tatiana Mellema of Toronto. An art history graduate of the University of Toronto, Ms. Mellema will plan and initiate a series of creative workshops at the National Gallery to introduce children to aspects of contemporary art.
Ariane Noël de Tilly of Montréal is the recipient of the TD Internship in Museum Collections Management. A master's student in the history of art at the Université de Montréal, Ms. Noël de Tilly will be engaged in a project to enhance collection management system records that document the National Gallery's media arts collection, in order to improve identification of and access to this material.
The TD Internship in Art Librarianship was awarded to Marilyn Ramen of Vancouver, who will use her 12 weeks with the Library and Archives of the National Gallery to gain a general introduction to the profession in the context of an advanced research library. Ms. Ramen received her B.A. in Art History, Visual Art and Theory, from the University of British Columbia, and is currently enrolled in the joint Master of Library and Information Studies and Master of Archival Studies program at the University of British Columbia.
Amanda Snyder of London, Ont., is a fine art graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design, Toronto, and obtained her Diploma in Conservation, Collections and Management from Sir Sanford Fleming College, Peterborough. The TD Internship in Library Preservation Technology will introduce Ms. Snyder to all aspects of the Library's preservation program, with emphasis on the provision and fabrication of protective enclosures for rare and fragile material.
