Service area description

Measurement Canada, an agency of Industry Canada, ensures that Canadian consumers can make commercial transactions involving measurement with confidence. Measurement Canada’s programs and services include: evaluating and certifying the accuracy of measuring equipment, investigating complaints from businesses and consumers who feel they have not received accurate measurement, and certifying measurement standards. Measurement Canada also authorizes companies to verify measuring equipment on its behalf, and assesses the performance of these companies. Measurement Canada sets the rules of the marketplace with respect to trade measurement, and ensures that they are uniformly implemented and respected through the administration of the Weights and Measures Act and the Electricity and Gas Inspection Act.

  • Tools (Gravity Tolerance Application to determine whether gravitational pull was a factor when a scale was serviced, repaired or installed);


  • Contacts for businesses and consumers who suspect they have received inaccurate measurement; and


  • Applications (to schedule requests for complaint investigation, for partner training, to become a contractor).

Our journey to success

Measurement Canada will continue to institute ways of improving online access to the rules and requirements that govern measurement accuracy in Canada and related programs and services. Planned improvements include simplified online processes for clients accessing services, enhanced capacity for stakeholders to provide their views on proposed regulations, policies and procedures, and improvements to site navigation to assist clients and stakeholders in finding the right information quickly. Ensuring the site is current and meets the needs of Measurement Canada’s clients and stakeholders is an ongoing priority.
