Quebec Studio (French)

In Studio B, Realities.doc, documentary filmmakers come together, exchange ideas and create. Through a rigorous yet personal approach, the films produced at Studio B contribute to public debate, such as Des marelles et des petites filles... (Of Hopscotch and Little Girls) by Marquise Lepage and Mourir pour soi (Let Me Die) by Lina B. Moreco.

They also reflect definite points of view, as in L'Homme trop pressé... (The Hasty Man...) (Sylvie Groulx), and unconventional thinking, as in L'Horloge universelle - La Résistance de Peter Watkins (The Universal Clock- The Resistance of Peter Watkins) (Geoff Bowie).

On a broader front, the Studio opens its doors to documentaries such as Raymond Klibansky (Anne-Marie Tougas), in which a philosopher shares a century of life and reflection, or Une Goutte dans l'océan (A Drop in the Ocean) (Lise Éthier), on the humanitarian work of a Quebec woman doctor abroad.

Studio B encourages emerging filmmakers. Recent examples include the project Le Juste milieu by Karina Goma and Stéphane Thibault, Mon oeil pour une caméra by Denys Desjardins, Les Chercheurs d'Or by Bruno Baillargeon and Dernier Appel by Caroline Martel. In addition to its open programming, the Studio concentrates on four areas:
1) Documentary Novel: With its documentary novel workshop, Studio B examines how stories are told in documentary form. The workshop focuses on “personalities” who plumb their memory, relive history and bear witness. The filmmaker becomes a conduit for history. Le Cabinet du docteur Ferron (The Cabinet of Doctor Ferron) by Jean Daniel Lafond and Le Fil cassé (The Broken Thread) by Michel Langlois are examples.
2) National co-production: Over the years Studio B has acquired expertise in co-productions. The first concern when considering new projects is to support creator-driven filmmaking, as was the case withUn Éverest de l'intérieur (Everest from Within) by Sylvie Van Brabant andPartition pour voix de femmes (A Score for Women's Voices) by Sophie Bissonnette. Two co-productions from 2002 are Wow 2 by Jean-Philippe Duval and Claude Jutra: portrait sur film (Claude Jutra: An Unfinished Story) by Paule Baillargeon.
3) Cultural Diversity: This program aims to encourage and support talent from culturally diverse communities. In addition to documentary production, such as Abbey (Pierre Sidaoui) and Arrabitâh (Ziad Touma), the Studio makes an equity fund available for technical training in production and post-production.
4) Aboriginal Filmmakers: One aim of this program is to help train Native talent. Young Inuit filmmaker Elisapie Isaac won the Cinéaste autochtone competition, which allowed her, in 2003, to complete her film, Si le temps le permet (If the Weather Permits).
