Studio Acadie (french)

The Acadia Studio is part of the NFB’s French Program and was established in 1974 with the considerable support of Acadian filmmaker Léonard Forest.

After the French Program was reorganized recently, Murielle Rioux-Poirier was appointed producer of the Acadia Studio, a choice applauded by her colleagues in film.
Jacques Turgeon remains executive producer.

Since its creation, the Studio has produced more than 70 films and with local partners co-produced more than 20, mainly documentaries.

Over 30 filmmakers have made their mark, filming their hopes and fears, their history and literature, their belonging and their differences. Notable are the works of Herménégilde Chiasson (Épopée, Ceux qui attendent), Ginette Pellerin (Évangéline en quête/Evangeline’s Quest, Durelle), Monique LeBlanc (Cigarette, Les chemins de Marie), Renée Blanchar (Raoul Léger, la vérité morcelée/Raoul Léger, The Elusive Truth, On a tué l’Enfant Jésus/A Hospital Crucified), Rodrigue Jean (L’extrême frontière, l’œuvre poétique de Gérald Leblanc) and Paul Bossé, whose Kacho Komplo was turned into a CD and a show given at Montreal’s FrancoFolies in July 2003, starring about 20 Acadian artists including Gérald Leblanc, Marie-Jo Thério and the group Les Païens.

The Acadia Studio also supported the creation and annual assemblies of the Front des réalisateurs indépendants du Canada (FRIC), which defends directors’ rights and interests. The Front also participates in various francophone cultural projects.

Programs and special projects

With the help of Heritage Canada’s Interdepartmental Program for Official Language Communities (IPOLC), the Acadia Studio has become closely involved in the community, offering various projects and training programs to emerging or seasoned filmmakers:

IPOLC initiatives

Tremplin
The Tremplin contest was created in 2005 and is a chance for directors to make a short film. The 2007 edition is launched in conjunction with the Ontario and West Studio and in partnership with Société Radio-Canada.

AnimAcadie
Since 2004, this competition has provided an opportunity to make a professional animation film. Co-produced with Connections Productions and in partnership with la Télévision française de Radio-Canada en Atlantique, Film Nouveau-Brunswick and Entreprises Nouveau-Brunswick.

Co-productions
Since 2003, the Studio has produced many documentary shorts by new filmmakers, in co-production with local producers.

Kinö
Three Kinö groups have been set up to make films or videos in New Brunswick (Edmundston, Moncton, Bathurst) and soon in Nova Scotia (Baie Sainte-Marie and Halifax).

Training
Various courses and workshops for emerging and professional filmmakers are offered, as well as Post-Input Acadie, an international training event for professionals and students organized with Université de Moncton and Société Radio-Canada.
