Mon Oncle Antoine - directed by Claude Jutra

There was a time when the general store was the crossroads of life, a place where a boy could learn all he needed for the way ahead--especially when his uncle was the storekeeper, and also the undertaker, and the nephew often called upon to lend a hand. This film recalls such a store in a village in the asbestos mining area of Quebec in the early 1940s.

Mon oncle Antoine is about a Quebec that makes no headlines but reflects the whole of life, the ebb and flow of hope and despair that might be in anyone's memory. In French with English subtitles.

The Rocket - directed by Jacques Payette

Meet Maurice Richard on and off the ice, and follow his spectacular career with the Montreal Canadiens--from the early '40s, when only a few thousand people turned out for pro hockey games, to the 1950s, when the Montreal Forum was bursting with delirious fans.

The Rocket features footage from games and revealing interviews with Richard himself, the first star of the golden age of hockey.

Shinny: The Hockey in All of Us directed by David Battistella

Whether on a spectacular lake set amidst the Rocky Mountains or a frozen patch of the Arctic Ocean, a 200-year-old pond in Nova Scotia or a slew in southern Saskatchewan, Canadians take to the ice to play hockey in all its winter splendour. Men and women, boys and girls, retirees and up-and-comers, prime ministers and plumbers - all are equal on the rink. Director David Battistella presents the unwritten codes learned on ponds and backyard rinks, and passed down from generation to generation.
