September 26 2007 to December 31 2008
In this new film discussion workshop, young people take on the challenge of finding local, national and global solutions to issues facing our environment. Featuring critically acclaimed new releases from the NFB collection including Manufactured Landscapes, Toxic Trespass, Refugees of the Blue Planet and Up the Yangtze, participants will learn about different issues concerning the environment through film screenings and facilitator-led discussions.
In this workshop, participants will work collaboratively in teams to conduct research, brainstorm ideas, and prepare a short presentation based on a film from the NFB collection. Participants will choose one issue from their chosen film and provide information, discuss the contemporary context and propose solutions that can be accomplished on a local, national and global level. Presenting groups will then open the floor to their classmates to contribute to the brainstorming session. Each presentation will be 8-10 minutes in duration. Each team will be competing for their name to be included on the NFB's Environment Cup, a prestigious award for the most comprehensive presentation and most lucrative solutions to environmental problems. In addition, each member of the winning team will receive a FREE annual pass for the NFB Mediatheque's digital viewing stations where they will have access to over 4000 films, seven days a week.
At the end of the workshop, participants will have learned about various environmental issues as presented in the films. Participants will also learn about the documentary genre and the role of documentary in highlighting social justice issues. Throughout the workshop, participants will be encouraged to open their minds to new ways that citizens can apply solutions to global environmental problems. Facilitators will provide support materials that will assist participants in completing workshop activities.
