Magic of Animation

September 26 2007 to December 31 2008

The Magic of Animation workshop focuses on Norman McLaren's cameraless animation technique. Our professional workshop facilitators use flipbooks and thaumatropes to introduce students to the notion of persistence of vision. Students learn how animation works like magic, tricking the eye into believing that static images, being changed in rapid succession, are actually one motion. This theory is put into practice when students draw their animation directly onto a strip of 35mm film. Students are encouraged to create gender balanced, non-violent, multicultural projects in keeping with the NFB mandate. The workshop concludes with a big screen projection of students' own animated film.

This workshop is complemented by screenings of award-winning NFB animated movies in our cinema and on our state-of-the-art personal viewing stations.
