Seeing Sounds

September 26 2007 to December 31 2008

Have you ever watched a movie with your eyes closed? If you have, you know how crucial sound is to a film. In this workshop, students learn about the importance of sound in animation, and how filmmakers use sound to influence and manipulate the images.

By screening NFB films, with and without different types of sound, students learn how sounds are used to communicate messages and to provide context for a film. They will also learn to identify different types of sounds, including music, effects, dialogue and narration.

During the hands-on element of the workshop, students work in production teams to choose an animated film on our state-of- the-art personal viewing stations. After watching a two-minute clip from their film selection, with and without sound, they will create a new soundtrack for it! Each group will make storyboards to help plan their new soundscape, while experimenting with a variety of tools from our ‘foley treasure chest'.

Using video cameras and microphones, and working in teams, students will record their own soundtracks in real-time while watching their film selection. The final project, complete with a new soundtrack will be viewed on the big screen in the NFB Cinema!

Films featured in the workshop include:

Begone Dull Care (1949, Norman McLaren)
Glasses (2001, Brian Duchsherer)
