Questions and Answers:

What is this announcement?

The Government of Canada is investing $59 million in the National Aquatic Animal Health Program (NAAHP) to protect aquatic animals from the harmful effects of diseases and to maintain the seafood industry’s competitiveness in international markets.

What is this initiative?

The NAAHP, by proactively protecting the health of Canadian aquatic animals, also protects the industries, such as commercial fishing and aquaculture, which depend on these animals and contributes to the overall economic health of a region.

To protect the animals and the industries which depend on them requires the Government of Canada to take on a strong leadership role.

Canada will develop a strong, proactive monitoring and surveillance program that is a co-operative effort among federal and provincial governments, industry and Academia.

Canada can now meet new international standards for aquatic animal health, secure seafood export markets and bring Canada's aquatic inspection and certification regime on par with Canada's system currently applicable to terrestrial animals.

What is the benefit to Canadians?

Canadians benefit by having:

  • healthy aquatic animal resources to provide a reliable supply of wholesome marine food products;

  • secure and expanding seafood export markets;

  • more stable regional economies; and

  • a growing recognition of Canada as a global leader in the export of sustainable, high-quality fish and seafood products.
