Building Envelope and
Structure Program (NRC-IRC)
To help Public Works and Government Services Canada (PWGSC) keep long-term tabs on the recently restored Peace Tower, NRC-IRC is monitoring various environmental factors and assessing their impact on the durability and performance of the Tower's walls - and will continue to do so for some time.
NRC-IRC researchers have installed sensors on the Tower to measure both indoor and outdoor temperature and humidity, and heat flow and air pressure. Other sensors measure tilt, movement across former cracks, and movement caused by earthquakes or wind. This complex monitoring system, with more than 170 sensors in total, is now fully operational and providing reliable data.
