I am pleased to be here today for the launch of the International Polar Year and for the confirmation of Canada's New Government's investment of $150 million in support of important research projects and initiatives that will generate results for the environment, the security and quality of life of Northerners and all Canadians.
This has been a productive day for Canada and the world. I met with the French Prime Minister and Sir Nicholas Stern earlier today, and we agree that the Fourth Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change will be a turning point for the world in the battle against climate change.
I am very pleased to be with you at such a great location on these traditional territories. At the outset, I want to thank, for his efforts and support, my cabinet colleague, Chuck Strahl.
I think I said the last time I was here that the mayor seemed to know I was going to be Minister of the Environment about a month before I did. He was coming to Ottawa and I said "Why does he want to meet with me?" I was President of the Treasury Board at the time.
I'm very pleased to be with you this morning. Canadians see the environment as a huge priority.
