Individuals Affairs

The Individual Affairs Branch is responsible for the Indian Registrar, the application and entitlement to status under the Indian Act, Band membership, Indian Monies, Treaty annuities, the administration of estates, and the creation of new Bands. This involves providing assistance to First Nations through the employment of Indian Registry Administrators at the community level and issuing a photo-identification card as confirmation of registration under the Indian Act. It also includes determining entitlement to registration and membership on departmental Band Lists and the transfer of membership determination to the control of First Nation Bands.

Other roles include providing assistance in the administration of the estates of deceased First Nations individuals in accordance with sections 42 to 50 of the Indian Act and the Indian Estates Regulations and responsibility for managing, monitoring and authorizing release of band capital and revenue trust moneys held in the Consolidated Revenue Fund (CRF), which currently total over $1 billion, on behalf of First Nations and individuals such as mentally incompetent Indians as defined under the Indian Act.
