FEDERAL GOVERNMENT FUNDS PROJECT TO REDUCE TEENAGE DATE VIOLENCE
FREDERICTON, New Brunswick -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, federal Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) and the Honourable Andy Scott, Solicitor General of Canada, today announced a $50,000 grant to the Ad Hoc Committee for Making Waves for a six-month project aimed at reducing dating violence in New Brunswick. The project, Making Waves, will provide young people with information on dating violence, and offer them the assistance and support they need to end abusive relationships.
"One of the strengths of the Making Waves project is its innovative approach of involving young people in finding solutions to dating violence," said Dr. Fry. "The National Crime Prevention Council recognized this project as a model for crime prevention among youth aged 12 to 18."
The Ad Hoc Committee brings together several well known New Brunswick organizations working to reduce violence against women and girls.
Status of Women Canada (SWC) is the federal government department working to advance women's equality. SWC's Women's Program, which is funding Making Waves, provides financial and technical assistance to organizations to support community-based action on issues related to women's equality.
Funding for the Women's Program was provided for in the February 1997 federal budget and is, therefore, built into the existing fiscal framework. This project is an example of how this government is prioritizing its spending so that it can better serve Canadians by making efficient use of their tax dollars.
