WOMEN'S HISTORY MONTH HONOURS CONTRIBUTIONS OF FRANCOPHONE WOMEN IN CANADA
OTTAWA -- "Yesterday and Today: Francophone Women in Canada", the theme for Women's History Month 1999, was announced today by the Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism)(Status of Women).
"In this Year of La Francophonie, we honour Canada's Francophone women who moved forward with perseverance and conviction to shape Canada as a nation," Dr. Fry said. "Long before they had the right to vote or to stand in federal and provincial elections, these remarkable Canadian Francophone women were devoted to developing education, particularly in rural areas, fighting for women's rights and social justice."
Women's History Month in Canada was established in October 1992 to celebrate the vital contributions of women to our country. It provides an opportunity to recognize the achievements of women from all backgrounds and in all areas of endeavour.
"Canada has seven million citizens who speak, write, sing, work and live in French, and nearly four million of those citizens are women." Dr. Fry continued. "I encourage individuals and organizations across Canada to participate in Women's History Month and celebrate the contributions made by Canadian Francophone women to the development of Canadian society."
