MEDIA ADVISORY



OTTAWA  -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State for the Status of Women, advises that in recognition of the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women, there will be a minute of silence in the House of Commons following Question Period. This minute of silence will be observed throughout the day in various provincial and territorial legislatures that are sitting.

Place:    Chamber of the House of Commons, Ottawa, Ontario

Following the minute of silence, the Secretary of State will host a Ceremony of Roses in the Hall of Honour. Participating will be the Right Honourable Jean Chrétien, Prime Minister of Canada; Leaders of the Opposition Parties and their critics; Leader of the Senate and the Senate Opposition; and NGOs involved in violence against women initiatives.

The details of the Ceremony of the Roses are as follows:

Place:    The Hall of Honour, Parliament of Canada, Ottawa, Ontario

This year, the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women coincides with the 10th anniversary of the 1989 massacre at l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, in which 14 young women were tragically killed.
