NEW STATISTICS GUIDE COMPARES STATUS OF WOMEN WITH MEN

OTTAWA -- To mark March 8, International Women's Day, the Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) released Women and Men in Canada: A Statistical Glance, a statistical profile of women and men in Canada. The publication is a concise and comprehensive guide to gender-based statistics that will be helpful in the development of fair and equitable policy options for the future.

"Women have made many gains in Canadian society ", Dr. Fry said, "yet profound challenges remain. In order to ensure that policies and legislation continue to reflect women's reality, we need data; we need a knowledge base on the barriers that they face."

The publication, produced for Status of Women Canada by Statistics Canada, provides a statistical comparison of women and men in the areas of population, family, health and safety, education and literacy, paid and unpaid work, income and distribution of positions of power. Women and Men in Canada: A Statistical Glance used in combination with other statistical information, such as the Economic Gender Equality Indicators and the upcoming Women in Canada, to be released in June 2000, will be an excellent reference tool for data users of all kinds.

"It is my sincere hope that women's groups, researchers, policy analysts and decision-makers, community organizations, businesses and other interested women and men will find in this guide, a helpful starting point in their efforts to advance gender equality," said Dr. Fry.
