SECRETARY OF STATE ANNOUCES FUNDING FOR INITIATIVES AGAINST SEXUAL ASSAULT IN ALBERTA
CALGARY -- The Honourable Hedy Fry, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) today announced a $84,400 grant to the Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Centres to support a variety of initiatives. These initiatives are expected to raise Albertans' awareness of sexual assault and give voice to the women victims and the centres that serve them.
"The crimes of sexual assault do not just affect the lives of the women victims, they affect everyone in our society," said Dr. Fry. "The Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Centres will help the government, the media, the schools and all Albertans work together to create public policy, effect change, and break the stereotypes surrounding sexual assault."
The grant will be distributed over the next three years and will be used to promote the creation of programs and policies that increase awareness and help combat sexual assault. Some of these initiatives include supporting school-based awareness and prevention programs, developing a public awareness campaign and helping the network of the Alberta Association of Sexual Assault Centres' member organizations to better participate in public decision-making and improve support and services for women victims of sexual assault in Alberta.
Funding for the Women's Program was provided for in the February 2001 federal budget and is, therefore, built into the existing fiscal framework.
