OUTSTANDING WOMEN TO BE NOMINATED FOR GOVERNOR GENERAL'S PERSONS AWARDS

OTTAWA  -- Six outstanding women will be recognized this fall when the Governor General's Awards in Commemoration of the Persons Case are presented. The call for nominations for the Awards was announced today by the Honourable Claudette Bradshaw, Minister of Labour and Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women).

"Canadian women make significant contributions in the home, in the community, in government and in business, in both paid and unpaid work," Minister Bradshaw said. "I invite Canadians to submit the names of individuals whose leadership and excellence in any field, in either a paid or unpaid capacity, has helped in the challenge of equality for women of all ages."

The Awards are Canada's premier recognition of the contributions of contemporary women to the advancement of women's equality. Instituted by the Governor General in 1979 to honour the 50th anniversary of the "Persons Case" and the five Alberta women whose determination led to a landmark victory in the struggle of Canadian women for equality, the Awards are presented each fall to six Canadian women, including one youth, who have continued the tradition of courage, integrity and hard work which the Famous Five of the Persons Case inspired. The Famous Five achieved not only the right for women to serve in the Senate, but they and their many contributions paved the way for women to participate in other aspects of public life. This contribution is further memorialized in a monument on Parliament Hill.

For individuals and organizations wishing to nominate one or more candidates for the Governor General's Awards, nomination forms and complete Awards eligibility criteria are available from Status of Women Canada, 123 Slater Street, 10th Floor, Ottawa, Ontario K1P 1H9, telephone (613) 995-7835, fax (613) 957-3359, TDD (613) 996-1322, Email: publications@swc-cfc.gc.ca.
