INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S WEEK CELEBRATIONS

Ottawa  --  Canadians will celebrate International Women's Week (IWW) from March 2 to 8, 2003 with a variety of events that touch upon this year's theme: "World-Wide Women (WWW): Surfing the Digital Revolution!", the Honourable Jean Augustine, Secretary of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) announced today.

"The advent of new information and communication technologies (ICTs), such as the Internet, has revolutionized the way people communicate, access information, create networks and develop business opportunities," Ms. Augustine said. "While it brings important economic and social benefits, this revolution also poses challenges and risks. This theme encourages Canadians to take a closer look at the impact of ICTs on women and, in particular, the Internet applications, and their use as a tool for the empowerment of women and the promotion of women's equality."

A number of events to commemorate International Women's Week will be held across the country during this week with Ms. Augustine participating in many. Details on those events follow:

  • On March 7 at 2:00 p.m., Ms. Augustine will join with Lieutenant-Colonel Karen Ritchie, Major Maryse Carmichael, the first woman Snowbirds pilot, and Naval-Lieutenant Karen O'Connell the first woman ever accepted in the submarine training program, at a reception honouring women in the Canadian Forces at Canada Quay in Toronto, Ontario. Also attending will be young women participating in the Athena Conference organized by the Toronto-area United Nations Association of Canada for young people in junior and senior high school to improve life skills in areas such as self-image, women's and human rights, and career-related areas.
  • At 9:00 a.m. on March 8, Ms. Augustine will host an International Women's Day breakfast at the Canadian Restaurant in the Six Points Plaza, in Etobicoke, Ontario.
  • In the evening on March 8, Ms. Augustine will speak at the Calgary Immigrant Women's Association, "Women of the World" gala being held at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, Alberta.
