SHE'S ON A ROLE!

OTTAWA -- Canadians across the country are encouraged to recognize their role models as part of this year's International Women's Week celebrations.

Announcing the Canadian theme for 2004, "She's on a Role!", the Honourable Jean Augustine, Minister of State (Multiculturalism) (Status of Women) said, "Many Canadian women work tirelessly to improve their lives and the lives of others, both in Canada and around the world. Some of these women receive little recognition for their efforts, yet provide shining examples for Canadians and Canadian youth in particular to follow their dreams, no matter what barriers and opposition they may face."

In conjunction with these celebrations, Minister Augustine announced a nationwide Youth Essay Project for Canadian youth. Young women and men between the ages of 8 and 24 years are encouraged to send a video, photo or written essay about a Canadian woman who serves as their role model. Excerpts from some of the submissions received may be posted on the SWC Web site and some of those role models will be highlighted in the material that is produced for Women's History Month 2004.

"This year's theme and Essay Project will encourage Canadian youth to express who are their Canadian female role models are while learning about the many areas where progress has been made in gender equality," the Minister added.

As part of her own celebration of International Women's Day, Minister Augustine will hold a charity fundraising breakfast on March 8, 2004 at the Canadian Six Points Plaza in Etobicoke, from 7:30 - 9:00 a.m. Tickets are $30.00.

At noon on March 8, Minister Augustine will speak at The Bay's International Women's Day Luncheon at the Bay on Bloor and Yonge Street in Toronto, Ontario.
